About | Meet The Board | Meet The Staff | FAQ | What Our Families Are Saying

How do I sign up for a place to stay?

We work with the MassGeneral Hospital social workers to review incoming and outgoing patients. You may contact Christopher's Haven via our website, or communicate with your MGH social worker about housing options, including Christopher's Haven.

Is there a limit on how long I can stay?

No, as long as your child is receiving pediatric cancer treatment at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, Christopher's Haven is your home away from home.

Are meals served?

No, residents are responsible for purchasing their own food and preparing their own meals. Arriving families are provided a few basics - bread milk juice, eggs to get them started. Many guests like to cook with others and coordination of meals happens periodically.

Is there a charge to stay at Christopher’s Haven?

The actual cost to operate an apartment is around $150 per night. Families are asked to pay $30 per night. If this is a hardship the family should talk with the MGH social worker about resources that may be available to help. Thanks to the generosity of guest families and contributors no family has never been turned away because of their ability to pay.

How do I handle house cleaning?

The apartments are professionally cleaned between family visits. During your stay you are responsible for the upkeep of your apartment as well as helping to maintain the community space for all to enjoy.

Are there laundry facilities?

Laundry facilities are available on site in the basement of the building.

Is transportation available?

No, the hospital is a quick walk across the street from the apartments. However, the apartment is located near public transportation and situated in walking distance to many Boston attractions.

Is there parking?

Christopher's Haven has a number of donated parking passes to the Government Center Garage which is about a ten minute walk from One Emerson. There is also discounted patient parking available at MassGeneral Hospital.

For those without a car, Christopher's Haven is walking distance to a car rental agency and there are Zipcars in the garage onsite.

What should I bring?

You should bring any personal belongings that will make you feel more like home. We will provide cleaning supplies, and bath towels, hand towels, washcloths, and bedding for each apartment. Additionally, we have extra strollers, high chairs, air mattresses, car seats, portacribs and other such equipment that you may borrow during your stay.

Can residents eat in their rooms?

Yes, each apartment is equipped with fully-functioning kitchens.

Is there a telephone in the room with voice mail?

Yes, each apartment has a phone that can accept incoming calls. You will need to set up your own voice mail greeting. These phones require a phone card for outgoing long distance calls.
