On October 19th, 2006, some 100 people from Boston and the suburbs convened to “Celebrate Children” at the historic Algonquin Club overlooking the Commonwealth Avenue mall in Boston. The evening featured a Silent Auction with sports memorabilia, luxury spa treatments, exciting get-aways including a private plane ride to Provincetown for a lobster lunch, a Vermont home and a weekend stay in Boston at the legendary Langham Hotel.
Terry Shephard, founder of WHY ME and Sherry’s House in Worcester spoke to the group about the importance of having a place where children being treated for cancer can be kids. He stressed the need for kids to be in their own special place, away from adults who are alo coping with the disease.
Special guests for the evening were Becky and Jacob Parrish and their daughter Bella, age 3. The Parrish family was staying at Christopher’s Haven at the time of the fundraiser while Bella received treatment at the proton therapy center at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children. The Parrish family has since returned home to Florida.
Co-chairs for the evening were Guy and Tanya Broadbent; Howard Weinstein, MD, Chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, MassGeneral Hospital for Children; Ronald Kleinmann, Chief of Pediatrics, MassGeneral Hospital; and Joseph Timilty, Vice President of the Algonquin Club.
