It’s barely been a year yet still I recognize the beds.
It’s only been eight months or so since hair has been on my head.
So when the doctors asked me to speak to all of you,
I was a little scared at first, but at least I’d been there too.

Maybe just today, you’ll forget about this place.
Maybe I’ll tell a story to put a smile upon your face.
We all need reminders that we are not alone.
And I’ll be there to pack your stuff when you’re finally going home.

Later in the day, a quiet boy, he took my hand.
He said, “Your name is Daniel but everyone calls you Dan.
I guess it just got shortened somewhere along the way.”
He said, “I’m calling you Daniel” and then was on his way.

But he turned around and said,“My name is Christopher.
People around here just call me Chris.
But I’d appreciate it if you’d use my full name
cause life is short enough the way it is.”

All I think I did that night was pray to you and cry
and say he’s just a little kid; it can’t be time to die.
Hold him in your arms and keep him strong
and tell him Christopher is the name of this song.

I got a call from Christopher he wanted to say hi.
He said he hadn’t been feeling well and wanted practice saying goodbye.
He said to me, “Hey Daniel, I’m really checking up on you
and if the Lord would let me grow some more, I’d want to be like you.”

And those were the last words I heard from Christopher
but he is in my heart every single day
and Lord I know he hears it when I say Christopher
cause I never forget to say it when I pray.

Christopher, keep him right by your side.
Hold him like you held me and tell him why he died.
Bring us here on earth closer and strong
and tell him Christopher is the name of this song.
